Gap junctions are intercellular channels which connect adjacent cells and allow direct exchange of molecules of low molecular weight between them. Such a communication has been described as fundamental in many systems due to its importance in coordination, proliferation and differentiation. Recently, it has been shown that gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) can be modulated by several extracellular soluble factors such as classical hormones, neurotransmitters, interleukins, growth factors and some paracrine substances. Herein, we discuss some aspects of the general modulation of GJIC by extracellular messenger molecules and more particularly the regulation of such communication in the thymus gland. Additionally, we discuss recent data... |

Maior Gl, PT, Alb e... |

The present research had the purpose to analyze morphologically the sites of endometrial implants on the external area of the musculature of the anterior abdominal wall of female rats, treated with dexamethasone. For so, these 15 albino female rats were used (Rattus norvegicus albinus), of the lineage Wistar with 90 days of age, that were submitted to the induction of the endometriosis, and divided in the following groups: Group I induced female rats to endometriosis and evaluated after 21 days (control); Group II induced female rats to endometriosis and after 21 days, treated with dexamethasone for 10 days; Group III - induced female rats to endometriosis, and after 21 days, treated with dexamethasone for 15 days. The dexamethasone was administered in... |

Mango flowering involves hormonal regulation of shoot initiation and induction events resulting in reproductive shoot formation. A balance or ratio of endogenously regulated phytohormones, thought to be auxin from leaves and cytokinins from roots, appears to govern the initiation cycle independently from inductive influences. Induction of reproductive or vegetative shoots is thought to be governed by the ratio of a temperature-regulated florigenic promoter and an age regulated vegetative promoter at the time of shoot initiation. Management of off-season flowering in mango trees is being accomplished in the tropics by successfully synchronizing shoot initiation through tip pruning and use of nitrate sprays coupled with management of the stem age to induce... |

Tissue culture techniques have been employed for orchid mass propagation by means of the morphogenetic route of protocorm like-bodies (PLBs). This study aimed to analyze and compare Indole-acetic acid (IAA) and sugar endogenous levels in protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) induction and development in Cattleya tigrina, in order to better understand this process and to optimize micropropagation procedure protocols. Leaves grown on MS (Murashige and Skoog) culture medium, suplemented with 9 μM TDZ for PLBs induction and development were collected after 0, 2, 7, 14, 30, 60 and 100 days of cultivation, for further analysis. Increase of IAA and reduction of sugar levels are strongly related to morphogenetic response, that is, PLBs formation over the preexisting ones... |

The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of diet energy level on performance and hormonal profiles of broilers during post restriction period. It was a split-plot experiment, and the main treatments were in a 2x2 factorial scheme. Birds were fed restricted to 30% of the ad libitum intake, from 7 to 14 days of age. After the restriction period, birds were fed ad libitum with diets containing low (2,900 kcal ME/kg) or high (3,200 kcal ME/kg) energy until 49 days of age. Broilers fed with high energy ration showed lower feed intake and better feed conversion and decreased carcass protein; however, abdominal fat pad, and total carcass fat were not affected by ration energy levels or feeding program. Neither diet energy level nor feed restriction... |

ABSTRACT This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of egg weight and egg physical characteristics on embryonic development, hatchability, and hatchling weight of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). In total, 689 eggs were classified in two categories: small (<13.5 g) or large (≥13.5 g), and different external eggshell and internal quality traits were measured. On days 6 and 14 of incubation, tissue triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) were extracted from embryos in both egg sizes and analyzed. Relative to internal egg-quality traits, large eggs had significantly higher yolk height, yolk diameter, yolk weight, albumen height, and albumen weight than small eggs (p≤0.01). However, Haugh unit score (p=0.27) was not significantly... |

The skeleton has several important functions, such as structural functions that provide mobility, support, and protection for the body. It also has an important function as a reservoir for calcium and phosphorus. The aim of this article is to show the principal hormones that are involved with the bone healing process. In this article, it will be pointed the mineral homeostatic mechanisms in the skeleton, controlled by the calcium-regulating hormones: parathyroid hormone (PTH) that maintains the normal extracellular calcium levels by enhancing osteoclastic bone resorption and liberating calcium from the adult skeleton; estrogen, considering that both osteoblasts and osteoclasts express estrogen receptors, it is reasonable to assume that the effects of... |
